John focuses on the intersection of technology and entrepreneurship. Prior to EME, John conducted research at a big-data startup in Beijing, analysing and presenting datasets to clients and developing internal data systems.
John was previous Head of Curriculum for Code Gekko, where he developed and taught semester long courses in basic and advanced programming languages (Python and Scratch). He is an avid learner as he is teacher, completing a wide range of business and technology modules in his spare time and applying these lessons to EME’s pipeline and portfolio companies. John has a particular focus on data science and machine learning, areas he studied while at Yale-NUS College. For his final year Computer Science project, he built and programmed a fleet of self-driving cars using the Raspberry Pi mini-computer, as well as open-source machine learning projects including OpenCV, Tensorflow and scikit-learn.
John is interested in how data can be captured and analysed to unlock insights about people, noting that it’s people that drive businesses and markets. He designed several experiments focusing on attention and behavior as a Psychology Research Assistant in university. He also co-founded two student organizations - a migrant workers’ advocacy group and a peer counselling training program, which has trained over 40 student counsellors.
John has a BSc in Computer Science from Yale-NUS College in Singapore, which he attended on a full merit-based scholarship. John is a South African-Irish Citizen living in Yangon.
